Abstract

This PSP contains the index of all Perspt Specification Proposals (PSPs). PSPs are the primary mechanism for proposing significant changes, new features, and design decisions for Perspt. PSP numbers are assigned by maintainers and represent a permanent historical record of the project’s evolution.

Introduction

Perspt Specification Proposals (PSPs) provide a structured way to propose, discuss, and document significant changes to Perspt. This index serves as the central directory of all PSPs, organized by number, category, and status. The version control history of PSP documents represents their complete historical record.

PSP Process

PSPs are used for significant changes only. Routine bug fixes and minor enhancements go through regular GitHub issues and PRs.

When to Use a PSP

Create a PSP when proposing:

  • New Features: Major functionality additions to Perspt

  • UI/UX Changes: Significant interface or interaction modifications

  • API Changes: Modifications to core architecture or command-line interface

  • Process Changes: Updates to development workflow or governance

PSP Lifecycle

PSPs follow a simple lifecycle with clear statuses:

  • Draft: Initial version under development by the author

  • Discussion: Ready for community review and feedback

  • Accepted: Approved by project maintainers

  • Rejected: Not approved for implementation

  • Final: Implemented and merged (for feature PSPs)

  • Withdrawn: Removed from consideration by the author

PSP Workflow

  1. Draft & Submit: Author creates PSP file and submits PR

  2. Number Assignment: Maintainer assigns official PSP number

  3. Discussion Phase: Community discusses in dedicated GitHub Issue

  4. Decision: Maintainers accept or reject the PSP

  5. Implementation: (If accepted) Code changes in separate PR(s)

  6. Finalization: PSP status updated to Final upon completion

Topics

PSPs are categorized by their primary focus area:

  • Feature PSPs - New functionality and capabilities

  • Enhancement PSPs - Improvements to existing features

  • UI/UX PSPs - User interface and experience changes

  • API Change PSPs - Command-line interface or architecture modifications

  • Process PSPs - Development workflow and governance updates

Getting Started

To propose a new PSP:

  1. Check if it’s significant: Use PSPs only for major changes, not routine fixes

  2. Review existing PSPs: Ensure your idea hasn’t been proposed already

  3. Create an initial discussion: Consider opening a GitHub Issue first for feedback

  4. Use the template: Copy docs/psps/source/psp-template.rst to start your PSP

  5. Follow the workflow: See PSP-000001 for detailed process guidelines

For questions about the PSP process, see PSP-000001 or create a GitHub Discussion.
